What about Datawarehouse / Business Intelligence BI in the internet like other web application?

I was thinking about creating datawarehouse / Business Intelligence (BI) System / Decision Support System on-line meaning in the internet like ebusiness web application, where users / small to medium sized companies could benefit from this.

What everyone think about this? I need real inputs to this.

Please feel free to add your comments, suggestions.

  1. Great idea. Will be useful for small businesses who can't afford thousands of dollars for business intelligence implementation.

  2. Hi Atul,

    Thanks!
I would like to consolidate all of the issues together & go over each of the issue points and come up with preferred solutions.

My Main aim on this , since almost all of the companies are spending lot of Money into Datawarehouse , if they are big corporations for them it should be OK.
But I am trying to concentrate on Small to Medium sized companies , where they can get the common platform such as Operational Source System (OSS) , operational Data Store System (ODS) , Staging Area , Extraction Transformation Loading (ETL Process) and common Presentation Layer (BI Layer).

They may need an architect to fulfill their requirements to fit into this web based common platform in a subscription model charge based on their usage & dw size .

    Thanks,
    Srini

I think this a good idea. The challenge is the data. Aggregating data from multiple locations, either from other hosted offerings or internal data sources, into a central location is challenging. A company like Saleforce can have snap on BI solutions for their clients since they control the data. Creating a general purpose hosting BI solution, that can take in varying kinds of data will be challenging, but could prove to be fruitful.

  3. Srini,
As Atul pointed out, it will be challenging during data aggregation phase thru web based offering. My 2 cents....Aiming for an in-house (hosted) browser based end to end BI solution offering seems to be achievable as the DW appliance space (Data Allergo,Netezza etc) is still for larger corporations requiring large upfront costs which is not an easy reach for small and medium business. I believe Open source - Talend open studio is currently trying to explore this idea...Check it out..

  4. An online CRM application like Salesforce will store & maintain customer data. They have full control over customer data.
But an online BI Reporting system will need to generate Reports from data stored & maintained by individual business. Access to this data would be a major issue.
